Irreversibility in air-conditioning systems. A comparative analysis.

Author(s) : MARLETTA L.

Summary

In the literature, air-conditioning systems are seldom studied in a second law perspective. This paper adopts exergy analysis to assess the thermodynamic performance of three common types of air-conditioning units such as all-air systems, dual-duct systems and fan-coil units with a primary air supply. Energy, mass and exergy balances make it possible to determine irreversibility production as well as the exergy efficiency of each component and of the system as a whole. The results are also presented in terms of flow diagrams which provide a clear picture of the exergy path across the cycle.
