ISO after completing its successful mission.

Summary
After 2.3 years of successful scientific operation, ISO (The Infrared Space Laboratory) has completed its mission. The operational cryogenic lifetime was even longer than the last prediction based on all ground test experiences. This elongated lifetime, highly appreciated by all involved ISO scientists, was, amongst other reasons, a result of lower than anticipated external heat loads to the cryostat causing a lower cryostat vacuum vessel temperature. Before this success some severe unexpected technical problems had to be solved during the development and qualification of the ISO-Payload Module/Cryostat. The most striking of these problems and their final solution are described. Consequences for the development of future space cryostats, e.g. for FIRST are mentioned. Finally some actual flight performance data and behaviour are described.
