Summary
THE LATTICE PARAMETERS AND THERMAL EXPANSION ARE X-RAY INVESTIGATED ON POLYCRYSTALLINE METHANE. USING THE OBTAINED THERMAL EXPANSION COEFFICIENTS, HEAT CAPACITIES AND GRUNEISEN CONSTANTS ARE CALCULATED. THE CONTRIBUTIONS TO HEAT CAPACITY OF TRANSLATIONAL AND ROTATIONAL MOTION OF MOLECULES ARE ANALYSED. THE DENSITY, VOLUME AND ENTHALPY OF THE EQUILIBRIUM VACANCY FORMATION ARE FOUND THROUGH A COMPARISON OF X-RAY AND DILATOMETRIC THERMAL EXPANSION COEFFICIENTS IN THE VICINITY OF MELTING TEMPERATURES OF CH4. THE CHARACTERISTICS OBTAINED ARE CLOSE TO THE VALUES OBSERVED FOR MONOVACANCIES IN INERT GAS CRYSTALS.
