Summary

X-RAY INVESTIGATION OF THE PHASE DIAGRAM FOR METHANE-NITROGEN SOLID MIXTURES IS REPORTED. THE BOUNDARIES OF THE MAXIMUM RECIPROCAL SOLUBILITY OF COMPONENTS ARE DEFINED IN THE RANGE FROM 5 K TO THE MIXTURE MELTING POINT. THE LATTICE PARAMETERS AND MOLAR VOLUMES OF PHASES ARE STUDIED AS A FUNCTION OF TEMPERATURE AND CONCENTRATION. AT CERTAIN TEMPERATURES AND NITROGEN CONCENTRATIONS, METHANE CRYSTALS DISPLAY NEGATIVE TEMPERATURE EXPANSION.
