Leakage rates and measuring of concentration gradients in flammable fluids.

Débits de fuite et mesures de gradients de concentration de fluides inflammables.

Author(s) : CLODIC D.

Summary

The energy-research centre of the Ecole des Mines in Paris carried out two series of tests on propane and isobutane in a specialised laboratory, the National Center for Prevention and Protection. The results of these tests have been presented in two publications. The main findings are as follows: concentrations greater than the lower limit of flammability were measured at ground level for quantities of fluid dissimenated into the room that were much lower than the practical limits set by safety standards (ie, ASHRAE 15 and pr-EN 378). When lit up, the fluid produced rapid spread of flames at ground-level, while leaks inside a freezer created reproducible balls of fire.
