MANY OUTBREAKS OF LEGIONNAIRES' DISEASE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM HAVE BEEN SUJECT TO ENGINEERING AND MICROBIOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION. FROM THESE INVESTIGATIONS, PRACTICAL GUIDELINES HAVE BEEN FORMULATED. UNDERLYING THESE GUIDELINES ARE TWO FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF CONTROL: (1) PREVENTION OF SURFACE FOULING ; AND (2) CONTROL OF WATER TEMPERATURE. THE RATIONAL BEHIND THESE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES, IS OUTLINED HERE, AS IS THE DESCRIPTION OF TWO RECENT OUTBREAKS OF LEGIONNAIRES' DISEASE.
