Linear motor for a linear compressor.

Author(s) : PARK K., HONG E., LEE H. K.

Summary

In contrast to conventional rotational compressors, the linear compressor is driven by a linear motor directly coupled with a piston. In addition to high efficiency, the parameters of a linear motor should be nearly constant, regardless of the amount of current flow and position of the piston, in order to control the position of the piston without an additional sensor. High linear motion reliability is required for compressors operated under severe conditions over long periods. Several types of linear motors were investigated in order to meet those requirements. Analysis and experiments show that the linear motor is reliable enough and that it has an efficiency of more than 95%.
