LNG bunkering vessels. shaping a cleaner maritime industry.

Number: 01

Author(s) : MIGUEL N. de, GUERRERO C.

Summary

LNG is currently one of the most viable solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships and has taken a relevant position as the most interesting fuel for ships to comply with stringent EU, and more recently IMO’s regulations. Bureau Veritas (BV) has been supporting the maritime industry by developing tailored regulations and providing high-quality technical support services for LNG bunkering vessels (LNG BV).
Peninsula is a very active marine fuels supplier, contributing to support maritime decarbonization, among other initiatives, through its LNG bunkering business and the operation of LNGBVs. The first unit, a12,500 m3 vessel, developed and owned in JV with Scale Gas (a Enagas’ 100% affiliate) is deployed in the south of Spain and a second unit, a 18,000 m3 LNGBV is currently being built in Hyundai Mipo, the Prestigious South Korean shipyard, specialised in small cale LNG tankers.
The paper and presentation will address several key aspects to consider when developing an LNG BV project, based on the experience of BV and Peninsula. On the one hand, BV has recently become the leading class society in the LNG BV segment
with a rich experience since 2012. BV's deep involvement is exemplified by the LNG bunkering regulation (NR.620), the leadership in industry association and port authorities’ guidelines for bunkering and technical assistance in risk analysis, among other support services. Supported by services provided to the industry, BV has built a strong reputation in the industry, currently holding  round35% of the market.
On the other hand, Peninsula is a key stakeholder in marine bunkering, deeply involved in decarbonisation strategies, with extensive experience in the international markets of conventional bunker fuels as well as a growing presence in the alternative fuels landscape, including LNG, biofuels but also working on different projects to support the green methanol and green ammonia application to the maritime industry. A summary of the topics to be developed during the presentation is as follows:
• Market expansion
Industry drivers in terms of regulations and commercial incentives and penalties Facilities growth with focus on ship-to-ship bunkering Demand expectations considering the evolution of LNG fuelled ships
• Update in LNG bunkering vessels regulations and technologies
Regulatory framework, international, regional and classification
Key technical requirements to be considered
Main designs and equipment solutions proposed
Technology trends
• Case studies of BV-class Peninsula operated LNG bunkering vessels
Through this presentation, BV and Peninsula aim to provide the audience with a factual overview and pragmatic approach of the decarbonization challenges and the evolving industry landscape, highlighting how BV supports and responds to these developments. We will also emphasize the importance of safety assessment and technical guidance that is key for the sustainable
development of the LNG bunkering industry.
