Load calculation applications manual. SI edition.

Author(s) : SPITLER J. D.

Type of monograph: Book, Guide/Handbook

Summary

This manual builds upon three previous ASHRAE publications that focus on the calculation of cooling and heating loads for commercial buildings. It updates the previous book (Cooling and Heating Load Calculation Principles, 1998). The manual outlines two methods for calculating cooling loads in nonresidential buildings: the heat balance method and the radiant time series method (RTSM). Extract from the table of contents: fundamentals of heat transfer and thermodynamics; thermal property data; environmental design conditions; infiltration; internal heat gain; fundamentals and application of the RTSM; air systems, loads, IAQ, and psychrometrics; heating load calculations; heat balance method. In the appendices: psychrometric processes; spreadsheet implementation of the RTSM; calculation of conduction time series factors and radiant time factors; solar radiation and heat gain; treatment of thermal bridges; treatment of uncontrolled spaces; correction factor for high-conductance surface zones. The accompanying CD contains Microsoft Excel spreadsheets that compute cooling loads using the RTSM. These spreadsheets calculate the solar irradiation, conduction time factor series, and radiant time factors utilized by the method. The spreadsheets can be adapted to compute cooling loads for a wide range of buildings.
