Summary

THE STUDY REFERS TO A LONG-CYCLE THERMAL STORAGE SYSTEM TO TRANSFER HEAT DISCHARGED IN SUMMER FOR USE IN WINTER AND VICE VERSA. VARIOUS ALTERNATIVES OF THERMAL STORAGE MEDIA, OTHER THAN WATER, ARE SURVEYED AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS AND STORAGE PROCESSES ARE COMPARED. AS A RESULT, THERMAL STORAGE BY MAKING ICE WAS FOUND THE MOST PROMISING IN THAT THE METHOD IS NOT COMPLICATED AND IT CAN STORE 8 TIMES MORE HEAT THAN WATER. A CASE STUDY WAS MADE OF A TYPICAL OFFICE BUILDING TO PROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF A HEAT PUMP WHICH MAKES ICE BY THE HEATING LOAD IN WINTER AND USES THE ICE FOR COOLING IN SUMMER. THE SAVING IN ENERGY WAS ABOUT 37% AND THE ANNUAL OPERATING COST WAS REDUCED BY 22% IN COMPARISON TO CONVENTIONAL HEAT STORAGE SYSTEMS. THE SYSTEM IS NOT YET ABLE TO COMPLETELY TRANSFER THE LOAD BETWEEN SUMMER AND WINTER, SINCE A LARGE STORAGE SPACE IS REQUIRED. OVER SHORTER TIMES, HOWEVER, THE SYSTEM COULD BE EFFECTIVE.
