Summary

AN OVERVIEW IS GIVEN OF SHORT TERM COOL STORAGE CONCEPTS WITH THE EMPHASIS PLACED ON AIR CONDITIONING COOL STORAGE WITH A PUMPABLE ICE SLURRY (SLUSH ICE) AS A TRANSPORT AND STORAGE MEDIUM. THE PRIMARY AIM OF COOL STORAGE IS TO ACHIEVE COST SAVINGS AS A RESULT OF PEAK SHAVING AND/OR LOAD SHIFTING. SLUSH-ICE SYSTEMS, WHICH ARE STILL VERY MUCH IN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT STAGE, SHOW PROMISE FOR OFFERING CONSIDERABLE ADVANTAGES OVER CONTEMPORARY ICE BUILDING SYSTEMS. THIS INCLUDES COST REDUCTIONS AS A RESULT OF SMALLER DIAMETER TRANSPORT DUCTS AND OF THE APPLICABILITY OF A RELATIVELY CHEAP TYPE OF STORAGE. THIS LATTER FEATURE COULD HAVE A DECISIVE INFLUENCE ON THE ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY OF CERTAIN ENERGY SAVING METHODS OF HEATPRODUCTION.
