Summary

CHILLED/HOT WATER STORAGE HAS BEEN PRACTISED FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS IN JAPAN AS A TOOL TO REDUCE EQUIPMENT SIZE AND ELECTRIC DEMAND CHARGE AS WELL AS TO COPE WITH PARTIAL AIR CONDITIONING LOAD DURING OFF-HOUR PERIODS AND NOW ITS BENEFIT IS EXTENDED TO USE OF THE NEWLY ESTABLISHED RATE SCHEDULE FOR GREATLY DISCOUNTED POWER CHARGE DURING NIGHTTIME. AS THE NEED FOR THERMAL STORAGE IS CONTINUOUSLY INCREASING, THE DISADVANTAGE OF SENSIBLE HEAT STORAGE USING A GREAT MASS OF WATER IS ENCOURAGING THE USE OF ICE STORAGE SYSTEM AND THIS PAPER IS TO PROVIDE ITS BASIC INFORMATION DESCRIBING ICE VS WATER COMPARISON, TYPES OF ICE STORAGE SYSTEMS, OPERATION METHODS, CONSTRUCTIONS, HEAT PUMP APPLICATIONS AND SUGGESTIONS TO IMPROVE SYSTEM EFFICIENCY.
