Losses in regenerators.

Author(s) : RUEHLICH I., QUACK H.

Summary

Stacked screens and sphere beds today are the only regenerator configurations which are important for cryocoolers. On the one hand, many investigations during the last decades have been done. On the other hand, it is known that stacked screens and sphere beds have intrinsic disadvantages concerning the ratio of pressure drop to heat transfer. This has led to some new regenerator designs with walls leading continuously from the warm to the cold end, that have been tested in cryocoolers, but with little success. Investigations to overcome the arisen problems are presented.
