Summary

The authors' objective was to optimize the performance of a two-stage pulse-tube cryorefrigerator (controlled by magnetic valves) designed to achieve refrigerating capacities of 20 and 50 K. Gas flow rates are regulated using a series of 6 magnetic valves (two per regenerator and per pulse tube). Optimal valve opening and closing times were determined using theoretical studies, for various regenerator layouts. For a nominal compressor capacity of 6.5 kW, the system optimized in this manner provides a capacity of 50 W at a temperature of 47.5 K in the 1st stage and 3 W at a temperature of 17.4 K in the 2nd stage. This is the equivalent of an efficiency of 5.7% and is slightly below that obtained using a similar Gifford-McMahon system. Other operating data are also provided. Using opening times and pressure losses at valve level, pressure trends can be simulated and compared with experimental values. PV diagrams can be prepared and analyzed.
