Summary

A PROGRAMME IS DESCRIBED FOR MAINTAINING ETHYLENE CONCENTRATIONS BELOW 1 PPM IN CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE STORAGE. THE PROGRAMME INVOLVES (I) AVOIDING THE SOURCES OF ETHYLENE ; (II) REMOVAL OF ETHYLENE RELEASED FROM APPLES DURING STORAGE, USING SCRUBBERS BASED ON CATALYST COMBUSTION, CHEMISORPTION OR ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION ; AND (III) INHIBITION OF ETHYLENE PRODUCTION BY USING GROWTH REGULATORS, RAPID COOLING, AND MAINTAINING LOW OXYGEN AND HIGH CARBON DIOXIDE CONCENTRATIONS. A METHOD IS DESCRIBED FOR ESTIMATING THE FRUIT INTERNAL ETHYLENE CONCENTRATION, AND THE EFFECTS OF VARIOUS FACTORS INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL TO THE FRUIT ON THE ESTIMATED INTERNAL ETHYLENE CONCENTRATION ARE ANALYSED.
