LOW OXYGEN SYSTEM PROLONGS STORAGE LIFE OF APPLES.

Type of article: Article
Summary
RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THAT ULTRA-LOW OXYGEN CONDITIONS WILL EXTEND THE STORAGE LIFE OF APPLES; COX'S ORANGE PIPPINS IN PARTICULAR; BY UP TO TWO MONTHS AND POSSIBLY MORE, ALLOWING THE FRUIT TO BE MARKETED FOR EIGHT OR NINE MONTHS AFTER HARVEST. BUT UNTIL RECENTLY, THE OVER-RIDING PROBLEM FOR GROWERS WISHING TO EXPLOIT THIS ADVANCE WAS TO MAINTAIN THE OXYGEN LEVEL WITHIN THE VERY CRITICAL RANGE OF 1.1 TO 1.4%.
