Summary

A HIGH PRECISION FUSED SILICA DIFFERENTIAL DILATOMETER BASED ON A THERMO-MECHANICAL ANALYSER WAS DEVELOPED IN ORDER TO MEASURE THE LINEAR THERMAL EXPANSION COEFFICIENT OF SOLIDS BETWEEN 20 AND 400 K. THE SENSITIVITY OF THE LINEAR VARIABLE DIFFERENTIAL TRANSFORMER IS DETERMINED ABSOLUTELY BY USING A LASER INTERFEROMETER, THE TEMPERATURE IS HIGHLY STABILIZED TO MINIMIZE THE ZERO POINT DRIFT OF THE SYSTEM, AND THE TEMPERATURE OF THE SPECIMEN IS ACCURATELY MEASURED BY A COMBINATION OF A CALIBRATED PLATINUM RESISTANCE THERMOMETER AND A DIFFERENTIAL GOLD-IRON-CHROMEL THERMOCOUPLE.
