LOW TEMPERATURE EFFECT ON THE FATIGUE FRACTURE OF AUSTENITIC STEEL.

Summary

THE AUSTENITIC 03KH20N16AG6 STEEL OBTAINED BY TWO DIFFERENT METHODS HAS BEEN STUDIED BY CYCLIC TENSION-COMPRESSION AT 293 AND 11 K WITH THE AIM TO PROVE THE POSSIBILITY OF ITS USE AS A STRUCTURAL MATERIAL FOR CRYOGENIC SUPERCONDUCTING MACHINERY. IT WAS STATED THAT THE STEEL FATIGUE LIFE ESSENTIALLY INCREASES WITH TEMPERATURE DECREASE AND THE FRACTURE MICROMECHANISM REMAINS DUCTILE. DIFFERENT BEHAVIOR FOR THE STEEL OBTAINED BY TWO DIFFERENT METHODS WAS FOUND IN THE LOW-CYCLE RANGE BOTH AT LOW AND AT ROOM TEMPERATURE.
