Low temperature high pressure enthalpy increment measurements on liquid-dense phase ethane.

Summary

In order to design an optimal refrigeration cycle for liquefaction plants for natural gas, a thorough knowledge of the thermodynamics involved is necessary. Some results are known. A better knowledge of the properties of the liquefied natural gas is also needed, and therefore a liquid loop was designed for our flow calorimeter. The liquid loop is designed in order to avoid the two-phase region, since two phases would give compositional disturbances in the measurements. The new design is described. To evaluate the new equipment, measurements were taken on liquid ethane over the temperature range 146 to 256 K at pressure levels 1.6, 3.2, and 5 megapascals. The used method is new and has not been reported previously. The project has been financed by the Research Council of Norway.
