Summary

Storage of seeds, pollen and bulbs is important for the production of agricultural and horticultural crops, as well as for the germplasm preservation and plant breeding. Low-temperature storage with desiccation has been widely used for the long-term storage of seeds in various plant species except for those with fleshy seeds mainly from tropical rain forests. The pollen with binuclear nature at maturity can also be stored at low temperature, whereas no method is available for the preservation of trinucleate pollen. In contrast, storage of bulbs at low temperatures has been conducted mainly for controlling the flowering period rather than germplasm preservation.
