THE MAIN REQUIREMENTS FOR REFRIGERATION IN PROCESSES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF LIQUID OR GASEOUS FUELS FROM COAL ARE IN THE GAS SEPARATION SYSTEMS. THESE ARE INVOLVED IN THE SEPARATION OF HYDROGEN FROM METHANE AND OTHER FUEL GASES. THE PROCESSES USED INVOLVE LOW TEMPERATURE CASCADE CYCLES USING PROPYLENE, ETHYLENE AND METHANE STAGES. ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES AVOIDING OR REDUCING REFRIGERATION ARE SUGGESTED. THESE INCLUDE ABSORPTION, ADSORPTION AND PERMEATION. THEIR ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES ARE LISTED. D.W.H.
