Summary

IN PLANTS WHICH CONVERT COAL INTO LIQUID FUELS AND CHEMICAL FEEDSTOCKS, TWO METHODS OF PRODUCTION ARE USED, ONE INVOLVING GASIFICATION, THE OTHER HYDROGENATION. BOTH ROUTES REQUIRE LOW-TEMPERATURE REFRIGERATION AT VARIOUS POINTS. IN THE FIRST, PURE OXYGEN IS PRODUCED BY CRYOGENIC FRACTIONATION, THEN THE GASIFIED FUEL GOES THROUGH PROCESSES OF ACID REMOVAL BY LOW-TEMPERATURE ABSORPTION, FOLLOWED USUALLY BY CRYOGENIC GAS SEPARATION TOWARDS THE PRODUCTION OF ALCOHOLS. IN THE SECOND, LOW-TEMPERATURE LIQUEFACTION METHODS USE CASCADE REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS. D.W.H.
