Magnetic entropy change in metamagnetic Heusler alloys.

Author(s) : HU F. X., CHEN L., WANG J., et al.

Summary

Metamagnetic shape memory alloys has stirred intense interests because of huge shape memory effect and different mechanism from the conventional ferromagnetic Heusler alloys. An abrupt change of magnetization across martensitic transition results in a large Zeeman energy which drives the structural transformation and causes a field-induced metamagnetic behaviour. Recently, the authors investigated the magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) associated with the metamagnetic behaviour in NiMn-based Heusler alloys. Large magnetic entropy change with small thermal hysteresis was observed in metamagnetic alloys Ni(51)Mn(49-x)In(x).
