Summary

The most economical method to create anti-filtration screens in earthen dams is artificial freezing. In the continental climate conditions of northeast Russia, freezing can be obtained in winter thanks to the low air temperatures. The use of cooling equipment with forced circulation of a liquid secondary refrigerant (in this case, kerosene) is recommended. A diagram of the freezing system, which features double-tube, counterflow heat exchangers, is presented. A simplified mathematical model is presented for designing freezing systems for high earthen dams. C.C.
