Measurement of ice nucleation in lichens using thermal analysis.

Summary

All of the five species tested froze above -4 deg C, indicating the association of heterogeneous ice nucleation active agents effective at warm temperatures. Ice nucleation activity was expressed over a range of tissue moisture contents. The results of the study confirmed earlier reports that lichen tissues were a source of biological ice nucleation activity. In addition, these studies demonstrated that ice nucleation activity is a characteristic of intact lichen tissues and is expressed under conditions representative of those in nature.
