BASIC CONCEPT OF CRYOCOOLERS BASED ON JOULE-THOMSON EXPANSION, GIFFORD MCMAHON CYCLE, VUILLEUMIER CYCLE AND STIRLING CYCLE ARE BRIEFLY REVIEWED FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE MINIATURE COOLING DEVICE FOR INFRARED DETECTORS. AMONG THESE CRYOCOOLERS, THE STIRLING CYCLE MACHINE IS SELECTED BECAUSE OF ITS POTENTIAL FEATURES OF COMPACTNESS AND HIGH EFFICIENCY. TYPICAL RESULTS OF THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON THE SINGLE ACTING PISTON/DISPLACER TYPE STIRLING MACHINE ARE REPORTED.
