Miscibility and lubricity of polyol ester-based refrigerator lubricants.

Author(s) : KOMATSUZAKI S., IIZUKA T.

Summary

Miscibility was greatly dependent upon the molecular structure of fatty acids which were used as starting materials in esterification reaction. Better miscibility could be obtained by using a fatty acid with a branched carbon chain. Lubricity of the refrigerant-lubricant mixture depended upon the kind of refrigerant. When R134a is used instead of R12, the lubricant needs much higher lubricity in order to obtain the same level of lubricity, since R134a has no lubricity in itself. Lubricity of R134a-polyol ester mixture could be enhanced to the level of conventional CFC-mineral oil or R12-alkylbenzene mixtures when suitable additives were added to the lubricant in suitable amounts. However, the lubricity of R134a-polyol ester mixture dropped sharply when the refrigerant ratio was over 50% in volume.
