MODELING AND EXPERIMENTATION OF THE ACOUSTIC PROPAGATION IN POROUS MEDIA UNDERGOING FREEZING.

ETUDE DE LA PROPAGATION ACOUSTIQUE DANS LES MILIEUX POREUX SOUMIS AU GEL -MODELISATION ET EXPERIENCE.

Summary

IN ORDER TO CHARACTERIZE THE UNFROZEN WATER CONTENT IN FINELY DISPERSED FROZEN MEDIA USING NON DESTRUCTIVE ACOUSTIC METHODS, A MODEL FOR THE ELASTIC WAVES PROPAGATION HAS BEEN DEVELOPE THIS MODEL, DERIVED FROM THE BIOT'S THEORY, DESCRIBES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE VELOCITY AND THE WATER CONTENT OF A MEDIUM COMPOSED OF SOLID, WATER AND ICE. THESE VELOCITIES MAY BE OBTAINED EXPERIMENTALLY AS A FUNCTION OF THE TEMPERATURE. THUS, THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE UNFROZEN WATER CONTENT AND THE TEMPERATURE IS KNOWN FOR THE MEDIUM CONSIDERED. FOR CONSOLIDATED AND UNCONSOLIDATED MEDIA, THE VELOCITIES HAVE BEEN CALCULATED FROM THE MODEL AND COMPARED WITH THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS. THE PROPOSED METHOD FOR THE UNFROZEN WATER CONTENT DETERMINATION HAS BEEN APPLIED TO AN OVERCONSOLIDATED CLAY. THE RESULTS HAVE BEEN COMPARED TO OTHER ACOUSTIC AND NON ACOUSTIC METHODS.
