MODELLING AND OPTIMIZATION OF A FINNED TUBE EVAPORATOR.

Summary

THE PAPER DEVELOPS A METHOD FOR THE MODELLING AND OPTIMIZATION OF A FINNEDTUBE HEAT EXCHANGER OF THE TYPE COMMONLY USED AS AN EVAPORATOR IN DOMESTIC REFRIGERATORS. EXPERIMENTAL DATA WERE USED TO DEVELOP A SIMPLE EMPIRICAL MODEL FOR THE OVERALL CONDUCTANCE OF THE EVAPORATOR AS A FUNCTION OF FLOW RATES AND FIN SPACING. THE MODEL WAS USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE METHOD OF LAGRANGE MULTIPLIERS TO PERFORM AN OPTIMIZATION ANALYSIS OF THE HEAT EXCHANGER GEOMETRY WITH RESPECT TO MATERIAL COST. THE OPTIMIZATION ANALYSIS SUGGESTS OVERALL CHANGES IN THE GEOMETRY THAT WOULD DECREASE THE MATERIAL COST WHILE MAINTAINING THE CAPACITY.
