Summary

THE FORMATION AND EVOLUTION OF VAPOUR CHANNELS IN A LIQUID-SATURATED AND HEAT-GENERATING PARTICULATE BED IS MODELLED. THE EFFECT OF THE STICKING FORCES ON THE ONSET OF CHANNELLING IS CONSIDERED. SIMPLE EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES ARE DEVISED TO SUPPORT THE MODEL DEVELOPMENT. SATISFACTORY INTERPRETATION OF THE D10 IN-PILE TEST CAN BE ACHIEVED WITH THE PRESENT CHANNEL MODEL.
