Summary

A CTI MODEL 1400 HELIUM LIQUEFIER WAS MODIFIED FOR OPERATION WITH A WET EXPANDER AND A SATURATED VAPOUR COMPRESSOR. THE J-T (JOULE-THOMSON) STAGE HEAT EXCHANGER WAS REPLACED WITH A LARGER LOWER-PRESSURE DROP EXCHANGER. THE WET EXPANDER WAS CONNECTED IN PARALLEL WITH THE J-T VALVE, AND A NEW RECIPROCATING SATURATED VAPOUR COMPRESSOR (1,250 MM BORE, 1,250 MM STROKE) WAS CONNECTED DOWNSTREAM OF THE PHASE SEPARATOR/CALORIMETER. AT ABOVE 4.7 K, THE MAXIMUM CAPACITY WAS 90 WATTS WITH THE WET EXPANDER ONLY, AND 40 WATTS WITH THE J-T VALVE. WHEN OPERATED WITH THE WET EXPANDER AND THE SATURATED VAPOUR COMPRESSOR THE MINIMUM TEMPERATURE WAS 3.2 K.
