Modified atmosphere packaging of sweetcorn.
Author(s) : OTHIENO J. K., THOMPSON A. K.
Summary
The paper reviews the problems associated with using films for modified atmosphere packaging and discusses current research at Silsoe College into the use of microperforated film on the shelf life of sweet corn during simulated commercial marketing. The best packaging proved to be unperforated film or film with minimum perforation. Cobs packed in polypropylene film with no perforations showed a reduced rate of toughening, weight loss and loss of sweetness, but they tended to develop "off odours". Packing cobs with the sheath still attached but partly cut away to reveal the seeds below was the best treatment.
