Summary

In 2013-14 Italy experienced one of the largest multi-country outbreak of Hepatitis A due to genotype IA of Hepatitis A virus (HAV). Robust evidence that imported frozen berries were the source of the outbreak was obtained by molecular characterisation of HAV detected in the food and a case-control study. contaminated frozen berries have a great potential to cause international outbreaks of Hepatitis A which can only be detected if a surveillance of HAV is implemented.
