Summary

The fungi which cause damage inside museums are classified by the author into three groups based on their water-demand characteristics. Almost all damages are caused by absolute tonophilic fungi and facultative tonophilic fungi among them. The actual examples are introduced. In addition to the fumigation method and environmental control method conventionally employed to prevent fungi causing damage, the paper proposes a method to purify dusts and pollutants which adhere and accumulate inside the preservation environment such as that for the storage and display of cultural properties and supply nutrient to fungi.
