Nano-PCM storage with finned elliptical cross-section channels.

Summary

The present work aims at examining the performance of a thermal energy storage including a finned heat transfer fluid (HTF) channel with an elliptical cross-section and nano-phase change materials (NEPCM). The system combines three passive heat transfer enhancement methods to fasten the melting process including utilizing nano-PCM, elliptical cross-section of the HTF channel and fins. By numerical simulations using the enthalpy-porosity method, one investigates the influence of the type (water/Cu, water/CuO, and water/Al2O3) and shape (sphere, brick, cylinder, and platelet) of the nanoparticles for four volume fractions (0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2). As expected, increasing the nanoparticle volume fraction augments significantly the melting rate. It increases also when one increases the nanoparticle shape factor.
