New orientations of the ITER programme.

Nouvelles orientations du programme ITER.

Author(s) : DUCHATEAU J. L.

Summary

Controlled fusion constitutes a potential source of energy for mankind. Among the various processes being considered, fusion by magnetic confinement seems the most promising and the Tokamak obtained the most advanced results. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion, the international community is considering construction of a 400 MW fusion reactor: ITER-FEAT (Fusion Energy Advanced Tokamak). The shift from an "ignition" project to a project that can amplify energy by a factor of 10 made it possible to reduce the size of the project, and thus to halve the investment costs.
