NEW PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS IN THE LARGE-SCALE FREEZE-DRYING OF MEDICAL PRODUCTS.

Author(s) : ROWE T. W. G., GREIFF D.

Summary

THERE ARE THREE CLASSES OF PROBLEMS: STABILITY OF HIGH PURITY PRODUCTS, PRODUCTION ECONOMY, LEGISLATION. FOR PURITY, PILOT STUDIES CONFIRMED COOLING AND DRYING PROCESSES. THE STUDY OF THERMAL PROCESSES BY DIFFERENTIAL THERMAL ANALYSIS AND THE MEASUREMENTS OF RESISTANCE WERE EXTENDED BELOW 193 K (-80 DEG C) AND ABOVE 10 MILLIARD OHMS. THERE IS A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE ROLE OF ADDITIVES PREVENTING MELTING AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE FINAL TEMPERATURE OF THE PRODUCT AS REGARDS ITS RESIDUAL MOISTURE. THE AUTHORS PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO CONTAMINATION HAZARDS. SYSTEMS WERE DEVELOPED FOR CLEANING DRYING CHAMBERS AND STERILISING THEM. HANDLING WAS SO DESIGNED AS TO PREVENT CONDENSATION AND THE FORMATION OF PARTICLES DUE TO THE RUBBING OF TRAYS ON SHELVES.
