A NEW FACTORY STERN TRAWLER IS BEING BUILT IN THE U.S.A. FOR A JOINT U.S.A. AND NORWEGIAN COMPANY. THE < NORTHERN GLACIER > IS 61 M LONG WITH 13.4 M BEAM AND 5.5 M DEPTH. SHE IS EQUIPPED WITH HEADING, GUTTING, FILLETTING AND SKINNING MACHINES TO FEED HORIZONTAL PLATE FREEZERS. THESE HAVE FREEZING PLATES MADE OF SOLID, SEA-WATER RESISTANT ALUMINIUM DRILLED FOR REFRIGERANT PASSAGES. REFRIGERATION IS BY TWO R22 SCREW COMPRESSORS AND A LOW PRESSURE PUMP CIRCULATION AT 233 K (-40 DEG C) EVAPORATION, WHICH ALSO FEEDS PIPE GRIDS TO MAINTAIN 243 K (-30 DEG C) IN THE HOLD WHEN OUTSIDE AMBIENT IS 298 K (25 DEG C) AND SEA-WATER IS 288 K (15 DEG C). THE FREEZER THROUGHPUT IS 36 TONS IN 24 HOURS. SHE IS INTENDED FOR ALASKAN WATERS. D.W.H.
