Novel refrigerant R-474A for automotive heat pump applications.

Summary

In this paper we introduce novel refrigerant R-474A, a zeotropic blend of R-1234yf and R-1132(E) perfectly suited for A/C and heat pump applications in automotive across the whole temperature spectrum. R-1132(E) is a novel component with a vapor pressure of 1,666 kPa at 25degC and a GWP of 0.0056. R-474A presents a boiling point of -43 degC and a critical temperature of 87degC, with a Global Warming Potential (GWP) below 1. Real-life performance data demonstrate an increase of up to 40% in cooling capacity versus R-1234yf on existing MAC heat pump systems at drop-in. This additional capacity can be utilized to meet the increasing thermal management demands of BEVs (supercharging, cabin heating etc) and/or to downsize the compressor and reduce
compressor RPM. Furthermore, additional improvements can be achieved by adapting pressure settings of components.
