Summary

The protective effect of air curtains in open refrigerated display cabinets (ORDCs) was investigated by two simulation models. In model A, the velocity of the 5 oC inner air curtain was maintained at 2 m/s and the 8 oC outer air curtain varied from 1 to 3.33 m/s, leading to the velocity ratio ranging from 0.67 to 4. The simulation results showed that the dual air curtain performed best with a velocity ratio of 1.33, resulting in a TEF of 0.21 and a cooling load of 0.48 kW. The ORDC performed worse with outer air curtain velocity that was either too fast or too slow. Model B fixed the total air mass flow rate of the dual air curtain at 67% inner and 33% outer. Compared with a velocity ratio of 4, TEF and cooling load with a velocity ratio of 0.6 increased by 33% and 26%, respectively. Both simulation models showed that a slower velocity for the outer air curtain was more effective in preventing hot ambient air infiltration.
