Summary

A two-stage Stirling cooler using helium gas as the working fluid is designed for on-board cooling of high temperature superconducting (HTS) motor. The superconducting motor is to be operated at 50 K while the thermal anchoring temperature to reduce the cryogenic cooling load is assumed as 100 K. The thermal performance variation of the cooler is thoroughly investigated according to the displacer motion of each stage. As the baseline for comparison, a Stirling cooler with a stepped displacer, which produces the same stroke on each stage, is also considered in this paper. The baseline aims the cooling temperatures of 100 K and 50 K for each stage and the PV power is assumed to be recovered by the displacer. The baseline design achieves the cooling power of 100 W at 100 K and 15 W at 50 K with the input PV power of 625 W. The recovered PV power by the displacer is 168 W. To examine the effect of independent displacer motions, the baseline design is modified so that the strokes of the displacer at each stage are independently determined. The independent-displacer design achieves the same cooling power with less input PV power (574W). Furthermore, the recovered PV power has been increased to 196 W. The individual movements of displacer affect the PV power flow and the amount of the PV power recovery, resulting in the higher thermal efficiency. The effect of the independent motion of the displacers is discussed in more detail.
