Options for a two-stage transcritical carbon dioxide cycle.

Summary

The paper provides an energy efficiency improvement opportunity for carbon dioxide cycles by implementing a two-stage compression process. Three different variations of a two-stage vapour compression cycle have been studied by using simplified modelling assumptions. For each cycle, the potential benefits of utilizing an internal heat exchanger, a suction line heat exchanger, and intermediate cooling between the compressor stages have been investigated. Based on model calculations, the split two-stage cycle is the best, and constitutes a feasible option for improving the efficiency of the carbon dioxide transcritical cycle. The cycle is in the process of being experimentally confirmed.
