Summary

A MULTILAYER TUNNELLING STRUCTURE MANUFACTURED ON THE BASIS OF TIN FILMS SEPARATED BY INSULATING BARRIERS IS USED TO INVESTIGATE THE NONEQUILIBRIUM PHENOMENA THAT LEAD TO THRESHOLD INSTABILITIES IN LONG JOSEPHSON JUNCTIONS. IT IS DEMONSTRATED THAT THE WAY IN WHICH SUCH INSTABILITIES DEVELOP DIFFERS FROM THE DEVELOPMENT OF THRESHOLD INSTABILITIES IN LUMPED TUNNELLING JUNCTIONS. THE INTERPRETATION OF THE FINDINGS IS DONE BY ANALYZING THE TRANSPORT EQUATION OBTAINED IN THE STUDY, AN EQUATION THAT ALLOWS FOR FLUCTUON MOTION.
