Summary

IT IS SHOWN THAT THE STANDARD DESIGN EQUATIONS FOR THE PACKED HEIGHT Z OF A COUNTERCURRENT CONTINUOUS CONTACT GAS COOLER/HUMIDIFIER WITH RECIRCULATED LIQUID ARE INCONSISTENT UNLESS THE PSYCHROMETRIC RATIO RIS EQUAL TO UNITY. THE DIFFICULTY IS TRACED TO THE COMMONLY USED BUT GENERALLY INCORRECT ASSUMPTION THAT THE LIQUID TEMPERATURE T IS UNIFORM. THE NUMERICAL SOLUTION OF THE RIGOROUS DIFFERENTIAL MASS AND ENERGY BALANCES SHOWS THAT T PASSES THROUGH A MAXIMUM IF RIS LOWER THAN 1 AND A MINIMUM IF RIS HIGHER THAN 1 ; IN CONSEQUENCE, THE STANDARD DESIGN EQUATIONS GIVE VALUES OF Z WHICH BRACKET THE EXACT RESULT.
