Summary

WITH REFERENCE TO THE THERMAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BOTH COUNTERFLOW AND CROSSFLOW COOLING TOWERS, NUMEROUS COMPUTER CALCULATIONS, MADE ON THE BASIS OF THE ENTHALPY POTENTIAL THEORY COVER A RANGE OF TOTAL PRESSURES FROM 101. 3 TO 80 KPASCAL, INLET WATER TEMPERATURES FROM 303 TO 323 K (30 TO 50 DEG C), INLET WET-BULB TEMPERATURES FROM 278 TO 300 K (5 TO 27 DEG C), WATER-TO-AIR FLOW RATIOS FROM 0.5 TO 2.5. THE CTI METHOD IS CONFIRMED TO GIVE ALMOST EXACT VALUES OF COUNTERFLOW. THEN, COMPARING THE ALMOST EXACT VALUES OF CROSSFLOW CALCULATED BY A FINITE DIFFERENCE METHOD, A NEW CORRECTION FACTOR FOR CROSSFLOW TOWERS IS INTRODUCED IN THE FORM OF AN EQUATION.
