Summary

THE ATOMIC PHYSICS EXPERIMENTS CALL FOR ION BEAMS WITH HIGH CHARGE STATES AND A WIDE RANGE OF PROJECTILE VELOCITIES. TO PROVIDE SUCH BEAMS, THE LINAC WILL ACT AS BOTH AN ACCELERATOR AND AS A DECELERATOR OF BEAMS INJECTED FROM AN E PRELIMINARY STUDIES OF THESE BEAMS ARE DISCUSSED, AND PROJECTED BEAM CHARACTERISTICS ARE REPORTED FOR SEVERAL IONS. SPECIAL ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THE CHARACTERISTICS AND PROBLEMS OF DECELERATION.
