Optimizing thermal storage tanks containing PCMs.

Number: 1870

Author(s) : HOOMAN K.

Summary

This paper presents a theoretical study aiming at optimizing the design of thermal storage tanks containing PCMs. A combination of basal heating and top cooling is assumed for the tank. The performance of thermal storage systems can be improved using inserts with very high thermal conductivity. This paper models the insert as porous medium and offers a condition subject to which solidification can be enhanced. For melting, the highly conductive insert is modelled as a fin length of which can be optimized by aiming at a uniform fin temperature. That is, the optimal fin length is used to avoid unnecessary extension of the insert. Finally, a combination of these two conditions lead to design space for the thermal storage tank.
