Summary

IN BRAZIL THERE ARE 580 FIRMS PRODUCING OR SELLING EQUIPMENT OR SERVICES RELATED TO HEATING, VENTILATION, REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING. THE EXPANSION RATE OF THIS SECTOR HAS BEEN 12% FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS. EXPORT SALES ROSE FROM 20.8 MILLION DOLLARS IN 1976 TO 62.4 MILLION DOLLARS IN 1979, I.E. THEY HAVE BEEN INCREASING BY 44% PER YEAR. THE SHARE OF AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT IN THESE EXPORT SALES WAS 23.6%. IN THIS FIELD THE BRAZILIAN INDUSTRY ENDEAVOURED TO DIVERSIFY THEIR CUSTOMERS: EXPORT TO 17 COUNTRIES IN 1976, TO 32 COUNTRIES IN 1978; THIS INCREASE CONTINUED IN 1979. BRAZIL REAPED BENEFIT FROM THE IMAGE . THE BRAZILIAN REFRIGERATION INDUSTRY ALSO EXPORTS TECHNOLOGY. HOWEVER BRAZIL IMPORTS COMPONENTS OF AIR CONDITIONERS, SUCH AS HERMETIC COMPRESSORS: 31.6 MILLION DOLLARS IN 1979, I.E. 36% MORE THAN IN 1978. J.G.
