Oxygen thermosiphon reboiler-condenser thermal-hydraulics.

Summary

Practical predictions of boiling and condensing coefficients have been obtained with a variation of the Chen and CSBK correlations. PFHE flow visualisation tests show surface tension effects which can substantially increase condensation rates at low mass-flux conditions. By defining the film Reynolds number to allow for crevice drainage, a Nusselt-type heat transfer correlation is obtained for industrial reboiler conditions. Counteracting this enhancement, it is suggested that in practice there is a significant sub-cooled condensate region caused by outlet distributor flooding. The implications of this effect on inert gas handling and downcomer design are noted.
