Parametric evaluation of closed refrigerated display cabinets performance.

Summary

During last years, supermarkets have increased the demand for closed refrigerated display cabinets due to their potential on energy savings compared to the open ones. However, the performance of this type of refrigerated display cabinets is not completely known, being of utmost importance how the generated airflow could affect over the temperature distributions. Consequently, this work presents a parametric evaluation of the performance of closed display cabinets. The air-curtains flow was evaluated and analysed for different operating conditions (i.e. air flow, initial and desired temperatures) by a set of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. This set of simulations served to accurately analyse and evaluate the steady-state and transient behaviour of the turbulent air flow distributions and temperature evolutions, comparing the performance of diverse functional configurations (i.e. open/closed doors) that the refrigerated cabinet is subjected under operating conditions.
